Thanks everybody for letting us know about your Backerkit issues! We’ve been trying to address a few of these questions, so here are some important updates:
When you select any book as an add-on, it won’t immediately adjust the price if you choose hardcover. But when you add it to your cart, it should show the correct price there ($50 for the hardcover corebook / $35 for any hardcover supplement).
If you’ve already filled out your survey, you can log in to Backerkit again to update your order. We won’t be locking down any orders until the 1st of the year. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please shoot an email to [email protected]!

It’s over! That’s it! The Masks Kickstarter is complete, and it was more successful than we ever hoped! You’re awesome, every last one of you, and I’m so grateful for all your support over the past month!
Let’s do a quick victory run-through of all the amazing things you unlocked:
THREE ADDITIONAL PRINTED BOOKS IN THE MASKS LINE! Thanks to you, the Masks core book is supplemented by three more books: The Halcyon City Herald Collection, Masks: Unbound, and Secrets of A.E.G.I.S.! Each one will be a full-color 6” x 9” compilation of awesome!
EIGHT ADDITIONAL LIMITED EDITION PLAYBOOKS! The Reformed, The Star, The Innocent, The Soldier, The Joined, The Harbinger, The Brain, and the Newborn are all going to be added to the roster of Masks playbooks! The first six will have their full matter contained in the Halcyon City Herald Collection, and the last two in Secrets of A.E.G.I.S.—and everybody who pledged at least $10 will get all of them in full PDF format!
CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSING AND EPUB/.MOBI FORMATS! Portions of the Masks text will be available through Creative Commons licensing—so you’ll be able to create and sell your own Masks products on places like DriveThruRPG! We’ll also release the core Masks book in ePub and .MOBI formats to all backers who pledged at least $10!
SIX PLAYSETS! Phoenix Academy, Iron Red Soldiers, Spiderweb, The Apocalypse Sonata, Agents of A.E.G.I.S., and The Lotus Eaters are all unlocked and added to the myriad Masks books! Each playset will take Masks in its own new direction, complete with all the rules tweaks and special moves you’ll need to play Masks in that setting! The first four playsets will be in Masks: Unbound, and the last two in Secrets of A.E.G.I.S.—and all will be available to everybody who pledged at least $10!
TWELVE HALCYON CITY NEWS REPORTS! We have twelve total Halcyon City news reports, each one detailing the heroes, villains, important personages, and events of Halcyon City! You’ll have a veritable torrent of plot hooks thanks to these reports, along with custom moves to bring these events and characters to life at your table! They’ll all be included in the Halcyon City Herald Collection, and everybody who pledged at least $10 will get all of them!
FOUR A.E.G.I.S. REPORTS! We have four A.E.G.I.S. reports unlocked, revealing the internal files of this secret agency and giving all of A.E.G.I.S.’s most pertinent details on critical parts of the city! They, too, will come with custom moves to ensure that you can use them at your table, and they’ll be included in Secrets of A.E.G.I.S.. Everybody who pledged at least $10 will receive PDF copies of them as well!
THE A.E.G.I.S. MOST-WANTED LIST! Secrets of A.E.G.I.S. will be beefed up with a lengthy A.E.G.I.S. report detailing many of the worst perpetrators on A.E.G.I.S.’s radar! The Most-Wanted List will detail some of the biggest and most important villains in Masks, adding detail to them, fleshing out their backstories, and providing them with custom rules material for you to use at your table. Everybody who pledged at least $10 will receive a PDF copy of the Most-Wanted List as part of Secrets of A.E.G.I.S.!
34 ADDITIONAL CARDS FOR THE DECK OF VILLAINY! You completed every single one of the A.E.G.I.S. Jailbreak missions, and that means that there are going to be 54 cards in the Deck of Villainy in total! 54 cards! That’s incredible!
ISSUE NUMBER 1 OF HALCYON CITY STORIES! We’re going to write our first issue of a comic book all about the young heroes of Halcyon City! It will be 22 pages long, fully illustrated by Michael Lee Lunsford, and all about one of the iconic playbook characters from Masks. Everybody who’s pledged at least $1 will get to vote for which character the first issue is about, and everybody who’s pledged at least $10 will get a PDF copy of issue number 1, and you can add-on a physical copy in Backerkit if you want!
We’re really excited to have this chance to do something new, to branch out and try something new for us, and we’re looking forward to making it awesome! We’re going to put this issue together and release it, and then if it does well, we’ll look into doing issue two!
Right now, we're working on getting our timelines together, now that we know everything we're working on. That means charting out a full production schedule for art and writing, while also still working on finalizing the mechanics. Stay tuned for an updated set of rules for final playtesting in November! I'll be putting up monthly updates to keep all of you in the loop as Masks moves forward.
We cleared an amazing $107,328 from 2,371 backers, and all of us at Magpie HQ are over the moon! For my part, I never imagined that Masks would be so successful, and I’m just bowled over by your support and pledges. I’m excited to get working on these books and to make them as awesome as possible! Thank you all for making this campaign such an amazing trip, and stay tuned as we move forward into making Masks real!
